Art Integration
Hi! My name is Ashleigh Evans. I am a big proponent for art integration in the classroom. I believe that from an early age children should be encouraged to creatively think and to not be afraid to be an individual. I did a lot of reading for a research proposal in another class and the impacts of art integration on reading achievement specifically were significant, especially for ELL students. In this blog, I have posted my favorite TED talk by Sir Ken Robinson who also believes that schools should be a place for students to creatively thrive in. The video is about twenty minutes long, so you do not have to watch it (although it is hilarious and very entertaining as well as enlightening) but I would like you to comment on your thoughts about art integration and some lessons in which you have taught through art and the results were inspiring.
I am not very familiar with art integration but I did some research on it and I found quite a few websites that gave some interesting projects for art integration in science for children. I will post the link below for you to check out!

Thank you so much for that resource! The ideas were really great and I really liked how they offered ideas for all grade levels. Very helpful! Science and art are two of my favorite things to teach too!
DeleteAshley, this is one of my favorite speakers! Ken Robinson is so intelligent and funny. His speeches really get your mind going. This one in particular breaks my heart. I hate that we have taken so much creativity out of schools. :( I am currently enrolled in Dr. Vitulli's class and it is making me realize just how important the Arts are in schools. Thank you so much for posting this!
ReplyDeleteMe too! He always makes me laugh, but to also think seriously about important topics. Plus, I love how he offers ideas on how to fix things he sees as problems. He is very proactive in making a difference in our education system and I really appreciate that. I loved that class!! It was so fun and valuable!
DeleteI was not sure about arts integration when I first read your post. But after reading a little more on it I could see how useful it could be in the classroom. I am going to do more research on how to implement it in the classroom. I found a great website that will also help me with STEM. http://artsintegration.com/portal
ReplyDeleteAshley, I am not familiar with art integration in the classroom. I do remember in elementary school taking art as one of our classes. We went about 2-3 times a week and I remember loving it! We watched films on Van Gogh and tried to replicate some famous artists work. Just from a quick search, I have found many articles about art integration helping to enhance common core!
ReplyDeleteI agree that children are not as free to be creative in the classroom. I am not very familiar with art integration either, but it seems to be an important part of our students' education that is not present in our schools like it should be. The focus is always reading and math and raising test scores. Schools should be a place for students to express their creativity. This was a great video. I agree with Sir Ken Robinson that creativity should be viewed as important as literacy.
ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent use of the weblog to encourage discussion with your colleagues in the area of classroom pedagogy. I was particularly impressed with the intriguing challenge and reflective question you posed to your group members.
